Can you be denied health insurance for a pre-existing condition?
The Support Life Editorial Team · October 28, 2026 · 1 min read
No. ACA Marketplace plans cannot turn you down, charge you more, or refuse to cover treatment because of a pre-existing condition. That includes conditions such as diabetes, asthma, cancer history, pregnancy and mental health conditions.
What can affect your price
- Your age
- Where you live (your rating area)
- Tobacco use
- The plan and metal level you choose
- How many people the plan covers
Your health history is not on that list. Every Marketplace plan also covers ten categories of essential health benefits, including doctor visits, emergency care, hospital stays, prescriptions, maternity care and mental health services.
The protections apply to ACA-compliant plans. Short-term plans and some other products sold outside the Marketplace may not follow the same rules, so check before you buy.
