Lost your job? How to keep your health coverage
The Support Life Editorial Team · October 28, 2026 · 1 min read
If your job-based health coverage is ending, you usually do not have to wait for Open Enrollment. Losing that coverage generally opens a Special Enrollment Period on the Marketplace.
How long do you have?
In most cases you have 60 days before or after the coverage ends to choose a Marketplace plan. Applying before the coverage ends can help you avoid a gap. You may be asked to show proof of the coverage loss, such as a letter from your employer.
COBRA or a Marketplace plan?
- COBRA lets you keep your exact employer plan, but you usually pay the full premium yourself.
- A Marketplace plan may cost less if your new household income qualifies you for a premium tax credit.
- If you have ongoing treatment, check that your doctors are in the new plan’s network before you switch.
Other life events, such as moving, getting married or having a baby, can also open a Special Enrollment Period. A licensed agent can tell you whether you qualify.
